| The Family Bible of John and Charlotte Marshall, with a photo of Aunt Hovey |
In the days when our ancestors had only a very few books in their homes, one invariably
was a Bible. In this book, often, the family recorded births, marriages and deaths. For this reason,
locating a family Bible is an event of great significance to those who research the family's story.
But our stories always are much more than the records of when we were born, when we
married, when we died. The presence of a family Bible tells more of the story. It tells something about the
faith of our ancestors and about the importance they placed on having this book and its stories in their homes.
Most likely, these large Bibles were not carried with them to church. They remained in the home where, at the least,
they served as the "official" records of significant family events. At the most, the Bible provided a frame of
reference for their lives. And if anything was passed to succeeding generations,
more often than not it was their Bible and its essential family records.
Do you have a family Bible, the records
of which you're willing to share with the larger Family? If so, please contact me at marshallfamily@zoominternet.net.

The Family Bible of
Elisha Robinson and
Elizabeth "Betsy" Rohrer Robinson
of Perry (later Hovey) Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania
Thanks to Sam Robinson of New Hampshire for scanning these images and sharing
them with the larger Family. This is the oldest Family Bible yet to surface--the Bible of Betsy Rohrer Robinson, the oldest of the six children of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall. Until after the 2002 death of Charles S. L. Robinson, it remained on the historic Hovey-Robinson property, in the Samuel Marshall Robinson House. Please see, below, my notes on certain entries, as they relate to the story of our Family (this last, still under construction!).

The Family Bible of
John Marshall and Charlotte Kelker
Lawrenceburg (later, Parker City),
Armstrong County, Pennsylvania
[see photo above]
Thanks to family of Mary Ann Marshall Turk of Parker City, Pennsylvania, for keeping this Bible for the descendants of John Marshall and Charlotte Kelker. Its most important records are those of the 1806 deaths of John Marshall's parents, with
their names and an estimated age when they died at "New" Lancaster, Ohio; and of the birth dates of the Marshall siblings
in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, prior to the ill-fated trek to Ohio.
Note that the great majority of entries are in one hand, in the same ink color. This tells us that
the records were written at one time, by the same person, and most likely from an older Bible record or from memory.
An educated guess is that John Marshall himself wrote these records. The Bible seems to date to the 1870s.
